This post shows the death throes of proud civic architecture.
Not too good, are they?
Musings and Snippets from a recently retired JP. I served for 31 years, mostly in west London. I was Chairman of my Bench for some years, and a member of the National Bench Chairmen's Forum All cases are based on real ones, but anonymised and composited. All opinions are those of one or more individuals. JPs swear to enforce the law of the land, whether or not they approve of it. Nothing on here constitutes legal advice.
I wouldn't mind sitting in our bunker (name on application) if at least 75%y of the lights worked.

ReplyDeleteDire buildings.

Currently my court house has a lift that doesn't work, yet again, and some court rooms that are so hot we have had to have a fan turned on. A fluorescent light tube out is annoying, but one that flickers is just torture.
ReplyDeleteTake the tube out until you can get a new one fitted. No more flicker.
DeleteMilton Keynes Courthouse opened in 1991, and the rain still comes in through the roof.
ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time, Scottish local government was organised into burgh councils and, above them, county councils. Then, in 1975, Westminster, in its infinite wisdom, decided that this system, which had evolved over centuries, was no longer fit for purpose, and should be replaced by a new structure, with "districts", somewhat larger than the old burghs but smaller than counties, and "regions" larger than the old counties.
ReplyDeleteOne inevitable consequence of this was that all the old local government buildings were no longer in the right place, or were too small for the services they were now expected to provide. So now all local government buildings in Scotland were built in 1975, on the cheap, and are uniformly ugly.
Its just shows the high regard we hold our justice system in if the buildings erected to dispence it are so awful and clapped out.
ReplyDeleteNewcastle Magistrates which is dropping to bits spent a huge amount of money on wheelchair lifts into their court- never been used- what a waste
Anonymous15 December 2013 23:05, your innocence is a real delight. Think old jokes about changing lightbulbs compounded by pfi ruled maintenance contracts!
ReplyDeleteGood heavens. Get a step-ladder and take out the tube when no-one is around. Cut the Gordian knot.
DeleteIf any HMCTS staffer reads this there will be big trouble.
DeleteElf'n'safety is one thing but JPs using their initiative - horror!
Bulb guidelines will soon appear, with a special surcharge of £10 for victims of dark corridoors and stairwells: oh no, hang on, that can't be right..........
When a light bulb goes in our Retiring Room somebody buys a new one and we just change it, and it's a funny thing but the sun still rises the next morning . . .
ReplyDeleteWe were having a chat about this in the retiring room yesterday. Our Mags Entrance security door has been broken for at least a month. In the good old days of the MCC, it would have been fixed the next day...ahh...that's progress for you...
ReplyDeleteHow the hell is it that Slough and Maidenhead not included in that list?
ReplyDeleteTwo incredibly ugly courts, not to mention places to visit. Come friendly bombs...
