We haven't had much to laugh about recently, so I was delighted to find out that a live show of the NT's The Magistrate by Pinero is on at my local cinema on the 17th of January.
It's a farce, but unlike some of the stuff we have to put up with, it's meant to be.
I'll be there.
Musings and Snippets from a recently retired JP. I served for 31 years, mostly in west London. I was Chairman of my Bench for some years, and a member of the National Bench Chairmen's Forum All cases are based on real ones, but anonymised and composited. All opinions are those of one or more individuals. JPs swear to enforce the law of the land, whether or not they approve of it. Nothing on here constitutes legal advice.
I went to see it just before Christmas and can recommend it. The legal advisor is a recognisable relative of a couple I could name - maybe the play is used in their training programme - and I was shocked, shocked to see hoe little attention was being paid to the dtructured decision processes and the Guidelines
ReplyDeleteAn enduring tale. First performed in 1885, the play has been revived many times, and had both musical and screen adaptations. Good fun stuff, and cleverly constructed. You should enjoy yourself!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to it, despite the kiss of death in the Synopsis, which predicts that audiences will be doubled up with laughter. Makes a change from being doubled up with wind, I suppose. Some years ago, a double bill came to Aberdeen - The Dock Brief and Edwin - both from the pen of John Mortimer and despite being arcane in parts were rapturously received. So, who knows?
ReplyDeleteIts a great little play, very much a farce, so is real to life. I saw the late lamented Ian Richardson of House of Cards in it he was marvellous
ReplyDeleteFollowing a couple of phone calls I am now invited to share the performance with a couple of dozen magistrates from my local court, after an informal supper. So bring it on!
ReplyDeleteThe company was good and the play was super. I have a weakness for pretty ladies in long Victorian dresses, but that didn't bios me at all.
