This Daily Mail report caught my eye today, and I was particularly interested to read it because I was at university with Mr, Abbott and we spent some interesting times together. I will not embarrass him by recounting any of the things that we got up to, but I can safely say that he is a fine actor and one of the funniest men that I have ever met.
No wonder he has done well at the Bar.
Musings and Snippets from a recently retired JP. I served for 31 years, mostly in west London. I was Chairman of my Bench for some years, and a member of the National Bench Chairmen's Forum All cases are based on real ones, but anonymised and composited. All opinions are those of one or more individuals. JPs swear to enforce the law of the land, whether or not they approve of it. Nothing on here constitutes legal advice.
As usual this Recorder is labelled a "top judge" by the Mail.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how they would describe the various superior strata? And I shudder to think who might be a "bottom judge".
So skinny dipping after shinning (stark naked too?) whilst in a state of total inebriation was only the non-embarrassing bit then?
DeleteMy lips are sealed......
DeleteI think the answer to that might be a humble JP!
ReplyDeleteIndeed - I know my place!
DeleteAlthough I can't help reflecting that I took up the job 30 years ago and am now considered by the powers that be to be in a somewhat more humble position than I was then.
So not you, then?!
ReplyDeleteWhilst this is amusing why on earth did this finish up at the Crown Court? The punishment handed out is well within the Sentencing Guidelines for the Magistrates' Court and one can only assume the defendants admitted guilt early in the proceedings. Did the bench send it there for sentence? Or have I missed something?
ReplyDeletePerhaps the defendants elected to go to crown, as they are entitled to do.
DeleteA very pertinent question. The defendants may have elected to stand trial in the Crown Court, of course, but at some later stage decided to plead guilty, possibly after the CCTV evidence was produced. Other charges may have been laid which were later dropped, but which persuaded the bench or DJ(MC) who first saw this pair to 'send it upstairs', along with any possible 'previous' disclosed at that stage. All speculation of course, but the same thought went through my mind on first reading, and these were the scenarios that occurred to me.
ReplyDeleteAlternatively, and some crown court judges don't like it, some mags send things upstairs "to teach them a lesson" or somesuch. Although the likely sentence is within guidelines, there is sometimes a feeling that "this is better dealt with by the Judge". Not how I (would) do things, but it (so I hear) happens.
ReplyDelete@ rex imperator - can't believe that any half way decent bench would do that
